The first floor has an expansive open space for studio, living/dining, or sleeping space with laundry and a bathroom. Upstairs there is another living space, a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. The views from the upstairs are quintessential Monhegan – in one direction is the ocean and in the other is the meadow with the lighthouse above.
This cottage sits on just enough land to hold the building with a small garden on one side, making it an easy property to care for. There is a septic and water usage easement with the neighbor.
The island of Monhegan is about 12 miles out in the ocean from Port Clyde. There’s a year round ferry, that carries people, pets and supples (no cars) with 3 trips daily during the summer and 2 trips weekly in the winter. It is a short walk from the ferry landing on island to the Carina. Monhegan has been an artist’s island for generations – perfect for open air painting or finding a quiet place to create.
The small, rustic village has several inns, a few stores and eat-in or take out food options. Most of the island is in a land trust with miles of hiking trails to explore. The cliffs on the backside of the island are spectacular, and are among the highest ocean cliffs in the country. And there’s a little brewery that is a perfect, sociable pitstop after hiking.
